Nepal VBS Curriculum: “We Are Family”
Day 1 (Mon)- Creation and Sin (God’s Creativity and Plan)
§ Teaching Points: Creativity of God in Creation; Uniqueness of Man (made in the image of God); All Things for God’s Glory (man foremost)
o Questions to Answer: How do we know God is creative? What does Creation tell us about God? Why is mankind unique? How is he different than the rest of Creation? What does it mean to be made in God’s image? How is God different than man?
o Teaching Helps: Use mirror to show reflect our image, like man reflects God’s image
§ Teaching Points: Disobedience of Adam and Eve; Consequences to Humanity; We are All Guilty (need for Savior); End with God’s Promise of a Savior
o Questions to Answer: How was Adam and Eve’s relationship with God before sin? How did it change afterwards (hiding, shame)? What was the result of sin on the creation, man/woman relationship, and relationship with God? What are some examples of modern day effects of sin (war, crime, poverty, death, abuse, govt corruption, etc.)? How are we all guilty? In what ways do we disobey God? Does man still give glory to God? Does he still reflect God’s image?
o Teaching Tools: Use mirror and put mud to distort image, sin distorts our reflection of God’s image
§ Activities: Nature Scavenger Hunt (ages 5-8, 9-12) – have kids go out and get different things that are in nature (leaves, twigs, flowers, rocks, etc.). Return to share about how each thing shows God’s creativity.
Day 2 (Tues) – Search for the Lost (God’s on Patrol)
§ Teaching Points: (Review previous day Lesson) God did not leave Creation in a Curse; God sent His Son Jesus who Reveals God’s Search for us; Jesus goes to Sinners (Luke 15:1-2); Teach Luke 15:3-7 “Parable of Lost Sheep” and 15:8-10 “Parable of Lost Coin”; Jesus Brings Us Back to God; Jesus Takes the Curse (sin, death) on Himself by Dying on the Cross and Coming Back to Life
o Questions to Answer: What does the shepherd’s search for the one lost sheep tell us about God (he cares for each one)? What does the woman’s search for the lost coin tell us about God (he searches diligently)? How is Jesus the Good Shepherd (give his life for the sheep)? How does Jesus deal with our sin? How did Jesus have victory over death (resurrection)? How do we join God’s family (adoption, Eph 1:4-5)?
o Teaching Tools: Teachers can perform short skit to teach parables
§ Activities: Treasure Hunt for Lost Coin (all ages)- hide a coin in the area where you are teaching and have the kids search and find the coin.
Day 3 (Wed) – Father’s Heart (God’s Grace in His Family)
§ Teaching Points: Review Previous days (Creation, Sin, God’s Son Jesus [paid the price, death resurrection], God’s Searching Heart, etc); Teach Luke 15:11-32 “Parable of the Lost Sons”; Describe the Two Sons (hedonistic/legalistic); Describe the Father (loving, allowing freedom, forgiving, lavish grace); Relate Each son to us; God wants us to be older brothers that share the same heart as the Father for the lost; Our job is to search for those who do not know Jesus (lost) and bring them to the Father; The Father never lets go of his children (assurance, security)
o Questions to Answer: How are we like the younger son? How are we like the older son? What does this story teach us about God’s heart for his children? What would a good older brother have done? How is Jesus like a good older brother(Heb 2:10, 11, 17)? How can we be a good older brother to others?
